Handcraft in Durham

A decade around the shared table

Founded in 2012, Take a Stitch 2 Durham brings textile makers together for unhurried sewing, needlework, and conversation twice a month.

Our beginnings

Independent makers, local roots

The group began when four local stitchers sought a dedicated Saturday gathering free from formal assessments or rigid curricula. They booked a quiet church room, put the kettle on, and invited anyone wrestling with fabric to pull up a wooden chair.

Over twelve years later, our tables remain entirely volunteer-run and member-supported. We swap practical advice on stubborn tension springs, share rare scrap cuts, and preserve traditional needlecrafts in good company.

What we practice

Every stitch welcome

Needlework

Hand embroidery and threadwork

From crewelwork and delicate blackwork to contemporary freestyle samplers, members trade tips on thread weights, hoop tension, and neat finishing.

Patchwork

Quilting and piecework

Whether assembling precise English paper piecing hexagons or piecing modern improv lap quilts, you will find generous table space to lay out patterns and pin blocks.

Mending

Visible repair and revival

Give beloved cardigans and worn linens fresh life through Japanese sashiko darning, patch reinforcement, and decorative structural mending.

Community voices

There are no auditions or skill tests here; you simply pull up a chair with your works in progress and someone always knows how to unpick a tangle.
